I am alone.
A Zebra in the open plains.
Exposed, unprotected,
Even though my herd
Is just a short distance from me.
I am eating the seeds and small plants that adorn the ground.
Everything is at peace but yet I am fearful,
Of not knowing what lurks.
Everything becomes very quiet and still.
I raise my head slowly and cautiously.
A sense of danger overcomes me.
I am being stalked,
In the grass behind me,
I turn my head back to look,
I can see the faint shadow of a lioness,
Ready to pounce.
The silence is broken,
By the wild laughter of hyenas.
My only chance of escape is to run,
I bolt towards the water hole.
I made it!
The lioness is nowhere in sight.
I wait,
Still afraid she will strike.
I let out a sigh of relief,
She must not have followed.
Thirsty from the run,
I lower my head for a drink of water.
All of a sudden I feel it,
The presence of the lioness.
She is stalking me again.
I let out a deep loud whine,
A warning call for the rest of my herd.
They start bolting,
The herd stampedes towards the lioness.
She runs,
If she stayed she would be crushed,
By the thundering hooves of the stampede.
Then I run with my herd,
Fearful to wander off again.
Hope you enjoyed that! Hopefully Persis will be writting more poetry, so that I can post that up here too! Please e-mail her any comments you have on her poem.
